    • From Gerry Newnham (email 16-Jul-2010)
He also doesn't appear on the 1851 database as he was in Ohio/Kentucky at the time, where he married Ellen Silverstone.
However no documentation of the marriage has been found - yet!
In any case the Cincinnati records were destroyed in a fire
around 1870 and although the records have been reconstructed Henry was back in England by then so probably wasn't aware that the authorities were asking people to re-register.

  • Notes
    • [Roy Parker]
(Research):Name on Marriage certificate is David Morris, parents given as Henry and Ellen Morris - born London England

Name on birth certificate of son Philip (Winnipeg 1888) is David Morris

Only record in passenger list (1883) is David Morris, destination Winnipeg.

Shown as David Morris in Winnipeg Directory for 1887,1888.
Believed to have returned to UK in 1889 (per letter from Ph yllis Parker - when Philip was six months old i.e. about Ju ne 1889)

Death certificate in January 1899 is for David Jacobs at 19 0 High Holborn
Birth of Maurice Arthur Jacobs is in Civil Index for 1890
Birth of David Albert Jacobs is in Civil Index for 1892
Birth of Ellen Dorothy Jacobs is in Civil Index for 1893

Widow and all children have surname Jacobs in 1901 Census.

When and why was he Jacobs?

Was he a friend of author W.W. Jacobs, whose books he gav e to Philip in December 1898? WWJ's first publication dat e is 1896, but he may have been a coffee-house customer.

No trace of David Morris born in London in 1862-63
      (David Jacobs born 4Q1862 Marylebone 1A 475)

Sarah Riley, Servant, Unmarried, 24, Nursemaid, Sheffield , Yorkshire
Walter Cleaver, Servant, Unmarried, 17, Errand Boy, Woodfor d, Surrey

First (wrong) Conclusion - born Morris (see 1881 Census RG1 1 Piece 0361 Folio 7 Page 7), Changed to Jacobs after retur n to UK, no known reason.

      Checked with WWJacobs' biographer (Anthony James) 9 Nov 200 4 - 011-44-127 387 1017.
Nothing in his papers re David Morris. May have frequente d coffee house en route to/from Birkbeck College, but too f ar from workplace (St. Martins-le-Grand) to be visited fo r lunch!.

1871 Census shows Henry and Ellen JACOBS in Brighton with s on David age 7 and Mears (?Morris) age 15. 1881 census ha s Henry Morris age 23 or 25 and David Morris age 18. Fits...

This would put David's birth about 1863-1864, matches 189 1 census entry.

Born Jacobs, used Morris from pre-1881 until return to UK , Jacobs again by 1891.

Nothing in FRL Jun 1863 - Sep 1864
