• Notes

  There is one main source for information on George Wheatley and that is the Houghton Heritage website. The main source is in the Houghton Hillside Cemetry document which can be found at http://houghtonlespring.org.uk/schools/hillside_cemetery_resources/houghton_hillside_cemetery_factsheets.pdf Look at page 6 of the document which gives a lot of information about him. However, a pinch of salt may be required when reading about his military exploits - not because they have got it wrong, rather it is more likely that George expanded on the truth a little. He is supposed to have served in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War and lost a leg to a cannonball. He was also awarded medals.
