  Parents of Elizabeth Ward (1867) In January 2019 someone raised doubts as to who the correct parents of Elizabeth Ward were. Their suggestion was William Henry Ward and Esther E Ward I believe that the details below prove that it was Joseph Ward & Ann Denningham (various spellings) Elizabeth Ward married Thomas Guinnane in 1890 [1890 JFM Chorlton 8C 1013] Thomas' surname is indexed as Gunan We know that they had at least one child - Bernard [1900 JFM Chorlton 8C 1005] (They actually had 4 children) If we look in the GRO records we find his mother's maiden name confirmed as Ward Repeating this process, without a forename, we find 3 other children Joseph (1891) Lilian (1893) Herbert (1895) At this point we have no date of birth for Elizabeth Ward The next step was to look for Thomas & Elizabeth together in a census. This is where life becomes interesting. They should be together in 1891, 1901, 1911 1891 - I have Thomas living with his mother and siblings - he is married but no wife - As yet I don't have a definitive entry for Elizabeth 1901 - Thomas is still with his mother & siblings, still married but no wife - Elizabeth is living with two of her sisters. [Both single & called Ward She has her 3 children with her [Lilian died in 1894] We now know how old Elizabeth is, 29, making her born about 1872 1911 - I haven't found Thomas in 1911 as yet - Elizabeth and her 3 children are still living with Elizabeth's 2 sisters Her age is now given as 42, making her date of birth 1869 1939 - Thomas is now remarried - Sarah Thompson Thomas gives his date of birth as 26 April 1867 which fits with his GRO entry. - Elizabeth has died by this time (1913) So, for the 3 censuses where Thomas and Elizabeth should be together, they aren't. Given that all 4 children were born between the 1891 census and the 1901 census we could possibly assume that the marriage broke down - but that still wouldn't account for them living apart in 1891. Anyway, back to finding Elizabeth's parents. From the 1901 and 1911 censuses we know that she had at least 2 siblings: Catherine and Sarah. None of the three sisters are particularly consistent with their ages: Catherine was born between 1861 - 1866 Sarah 1863 - 1870 Elizabeth 1867 - 1872 The next step was to find all 3 sisters together in a census between 1861 and 1881 The 1871 census [RG 10/4002 F103 P23/24] has a Ward family comprising parents Joseph and Ann Ward (both born in Ireland) and 5 daughters including Catherine (1861), Sarah Ann (1863) and Elizabeth (1867). These dates of birth fit within the range listed above. The likelihood of there being two such census entries is low. Also living with the family are a family of relatives called Denningham (spelling varies). The oldest member of this family, is James aged 75. I am inclined to believe that he is Ann Ward's father. Looking for GRO births for the children finds similar surnames for their mother: Dinning, Dennigan, Dunnigan. Note that Thomas & Elizabeth's son, Herbert, gives his next of kin as Sarah Ward (aunt) in 1916 (Service Record) - she is living at 4 Dur(n)ham Street and he gives that as his discharge address. In 1911 they lived at No. 28 Looking at the other person's entry which has Elizabeth's parents as William Henry Ward and Esther E. Based on the date of birth they have for Henry W (1838), the earliest they could have married was 1854. Equally, they have Elizabeth born 1869 which gives a likely range for William & Esther's marriage of 1854 -1869. I have found 11 possibles:- 1854 Esther Ann Lee 1854 Esther Mackey 1855 Esther Slade 1857 Esther Bratt 1860 Esther Holden 1860 Esther Lees 1861 Esther Elizabeth Forrest 1862 Esther Elliott 1864 Esther Nutter 1867 Esther Cordery 1869 Esther Joyce Unfortunately none of these appear to fit.
