  Samuel Hart / Charles Merton Samuel changed his name to Charles Merton. We have no idea why. He marries Alice Lynn as Hart in 1876 This seems to have happened in early 1876. In the 1881 census he is Charles Merton and the rest of the family are also Merton Their first 6 children all have Merton as part of their forename but have Hart as their surname.
