    Notes:

Robert Henry Horn / Robert Mackney
This has long been a puzzle.

I was contact some years ago by Lesley McNair who believed that her ancestor, Robert Mackney, was the same person as the Robert Mackney in my tree.

Over the years it became apparent that they werent the same person, but that there was a connection somewhere along the way.

In February 2021 Lesley contacted me and said that she was convinced that her Robert Mackney was in fact Robert Henry Horn, whose mother had been Elizabeth McNair, the aunt of my Robert Mackney.

This put a different light on things.

Lesley couldnt find Robert Henry Horn after his parents died, and equally she couldnt find Robert Mackney before Robert Horns parents died.

Everything seemed to fit, but proving it was a different matter.

Eventually I managed to find a Liverpool Workhouse record that made the link.
Robert was listed as both Robert Henry Horn, and Mackney, and gave his wife as Mary Alice Mackney. The problem was solved.

    Notes:

Based on the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census I believe that
James McNair married a girl called Wilton
They had at least 3 children
    His wife died
Her sister, Hannah, came to live with James before 1841
James & Hannah then had 2 children Thomas and Elijah
James & Hannah probably never married - in the 1861 census Hannah is listed as unmarried and her two sons are living with her using the name Mc Nair Wilton

According to Thomas Mackney Wilton's marriage cert, James was a bricklayer.

    Census:

    Census:
Relation to Head of House: Head
    Bricklayer Widower
    Born in Scotland

    Probate:
In the Probate index he is listed as being a Widower (strictly this is true as he didn't marry Hannah).
    Effects under ?300

Interestingly, Admons were granted to Elizabeth Horn (wife of Henry Horn, a woodturner) of 21 Brunswick Street, Water Lane, Holbeck, the only child of the deceased.
She definitely wasn't the only child, nor was she the only living child, but she was the only legitimate child.

    Died:
In the Probate index he is listed as being a Widower (strictly this is true as he didn't marry Hannah)

James married Mary WILTON on 25 Nov 1825 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Mary (daughter of John WILTON and Hannah [WILTON]) was born on 7 Jun 1806 in Wath, Yorkshire, England; was christened on 9 Jun 1806 in Wath, Yorkshire, England; died between Jul 1838 and Sep 1838 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England; was buried on 5 Jul 1838 in Wath, Yorkshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Mary WILTON was born on 7 Jun 1806 in Wath, Yorkshire, England; was christened on 9 Jun 1806 in Wath, Yorkshire, England (daughter of John WILTON and Hannah [WILTON]); died between Jul 1838 and Sep 1838 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England; was buried on 5 Jul 1838 in Wath, Yorkshire, England.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Reference Number: BR 0070b

    Notes:

Believe that she married James McNair, had 7 children with him and then died.
After her death her sister, Hannah, filled the gap.

    Died:
As Mary Mack Nare (indexed under Nare)

    Buried:
    St Mary's church
    Recorded as MacNare

    Notes:

    Married:
The parish register entry clearly gives Mary's surname as Walton but I have some doubts over her signature. I think that the signatures of bride, groom and witnesses may not be originals - they look too neat and similar. [The unsure signature is on the original PR, the BT copy is a definite Walton]
In my own mind I am satisfied that Mary is indeed Wilton.
Unfortunately the Banns register has not survived so it is unlikely that we will find any other proof.
