- [Gresford Colliery](https://quarlton.co.uk/gresford-colliery/): On 22nd September 1934 there was an explosion and underground fire at the Gresford Colliery, near Wrexham, North Wales.261 men lost their lives. Only 8 bodies were recovered. One of the casualties was Fred Duckett of Ruabon, my (Ruth) 1st cousin twice removed. More details of the disaster can be found on Wikipedia

Quite what the act was is unknown at this time but it is likely that he was performing theatrical acts. In 1879 Robert is in poor health and the business is in decline. We know from his diary entries that he toured with them in 1913-1914, 1918, 1920. In 1921 he toured America with the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The original act was known as ‘The Lomas Troupe’ and was formed by Robert Lomas. The earliest entry that I have found for the act was in The Era on the 7th September 1895, at which time Bob would have been 23. Prior to this we don’t know if he actually performed with his parents, but I suspect that it is likely. His father, Richard Lomas, died young in 1889 – aged just 37.
