188 | GEORGE DOUGLAS VERNON He was born Circa 1845/1849, possibly 1847, probably in Montrose, Fife / Forfar (now Angus?) Scotland The Scottish way of naming children: First son named after paternal grandfather (George Hardie) First daughter named after maternal grandmother (Harriet Scott Ainslie) Second daughter (Annie Rosslyn) after paternal grandmother Could his mother's name have been Annie Rosslyn or possibly surname Hardie or did they come from Rosslyn (Roslin) a village in Midlothian near Edinburgh? Was George Douglas Vernon's grandmother's surname Douglas? The following information supplied by Doris Vernon (his grand daughter): His father had married a servant girl. His father was a Captain in the Army - a Scottish Regiment, and died in India. (Possibly in the India Mutiny of the 1850's - presumably his mother died also). George Douglas was left an orphan in London and after going north was adopted by a family in Salford when he was 9 years old. (therefore possibly circa 1856) On his Marriage Certificate he gives his father's name as George Vernon, Officer in the Army but this could be either his real father's name or his adopted father's name. His adopted father's surname could have been Douglas. The Marriage Certificate does not state 'deceased' for his father. HE COULD HAVE BEEN BORN GEORGE VERNON or GEORGE DOUGLAS or GEORGE DOUGLAS VERNON. He married on 10 July 1871 and gave his age as 24 which gives a birth c1847. He died 18 August 1924 and his age was given as 77 which agrees with c1847. Death Registered by Reg Vernon, 65 Chesham Road, Bury, Lancashire. He started working for the Prudential Insurance Company in Eccles in September 1887 and finished on 14 January 1918. His birth is given as 1847 so he would have been 70 / 71 when he retired. A George Henry Vernon was born: 1877 Barton I / Heaton Mersey - unlikely to be theirs as George Hardie Vernon still alive. He was a Deacon at Castlecroft Congregational Church, Bury, Lancashire (04 October 1917) Any connection with Fettes College, Edinburgh which opened in 1870 ?
